if you cant erase the text:
YOU HAVE TO BREAK APART THE TEXT BEFORE YOU CAN ERASE IT
do this by pressing "command+B" if you are using a mac, or "ctrl+B" if you are using a PC.
Breaking the text apart once will seperate the text into induvidual letters, but to erase text, you must break it apart TWICE, the second converting the letters to fills.

You can use Mirage, it does all the work for you and all you need to do is set your time, how long you want it to take.

I think a mask would be more intuitive, you could draw the mask forwards (the same way you write). Just start off by revealing nothing then animate the mask over the letters.
